One of the highlights of the school year at ROHI is seeing the incredible creativity of our students and families during our World Environment Day celebration.
In the communities surrounding the Tegucigalpa city dump, recycling is a part of daily life. Most of our families earn their living collecting and sorting recyclable materials. This annual event gives students and parents the opportunity to see those materials in a different way, transforming items that might otherwise be discarded into something beautiful and useful.
Over the years, our World Environment Day projects have included fashion shows featuring clothing and costumes made from recycled materials such as chip bags, coffee bags, plastic spoons, and other discarded items. The creativity has always been amazing.
This year’s challenge was different.
Each grade level worked together with parents to create something that would improve the ROHI campus. Using recycled tires, wooden pallets, cable reels, and other reclaimed materials, families designed and built projects that the students can enjoy every day.
The results were incredible.

Old tires became colorful chairs, tables, benches, planters, and playground equipment. Wooden pallets were transformed into sturdy furniture. Large wooden cable reels found new life as cheerful tables and stools decorated with ladybugs, bees, and bright colors.

What made the event especially meaningful was seeing parents and students working side by side. Families spent hours painting, building, sanding, assembling, and decorating their projects. Laughter filled the campus as everyone worked together toward a common goal.
By the end of the day, ROHI had gained much more than new furniture and decorations.
The event created opportunities for teamwork, problem solving, creativity, and community involvement. It gave students a chance to take pride in improving their school and allowed parents to contribute their talents and ideas in a tangible way.

Today, children are already enjoying the benches, tables, chairs, and play areas created during the event. Every colorful piece tells a story of imagination, hard work, and a community coming together to make ROHI an even better place for children to learn and grow.
We are so grateful for the students, parents, and staff who participated and helped make this year’s World Environment Day celebration such a success.
What began as discarded materials became something far more valuable: a reminder that with creativity, teamwork, and a little hard work, beautiful things can be created from what others overlook.
