Every July 20, schools across Honduras celebrate Lempira Day, honoring the courageous Lenca leader who became a symbol of Honduras’ indigenous heritage, resilience, and love for his people.
At ROHI, this annual celebration is one of the highlights of the school year.
For weeks leading up to the event, students, parents, and teachers worked together to create incredible traditional costumes inspired by Honduras’ indigenous cultures. Many of the costumes were handcrafted using natural and recycled materials, including beans, corn, seeds, dried plants, leaves, feathers, burlap, and other creative elements. The imagination, craftsmanship, and attention to detail were truly remarkable.
Each class proudly participated in the celebration, sharing songs, presentations, and traditional dress while learning about the life and legacy of Lempira and the importance of preserving Honduras’ rich cultural heritage.
One of the things we love most about this celebration is seeing families work side by side. Parents and children spend time designing and creating the costumes together, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for Honduras’ history and traditions.
For many of our students, this is much more than a school activity. It is an opportunity to take pride in their country, celebrate their heritage, build confidence, and discover that their creativity and hard work are something to be celebrated.
We are so grateful to our dedicated teachers, who spend countless hours planning meaningful learning experiences like this, and to our wonderful parents, whose creativity, encouragement, and partnership help make each celebration so special. Together, they create opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and shine.
